WOMEN AND THE UNITED NATIONS

Along with Joan Libby Hawk, the former head of public affairs for UNIFEM, Stephenie has taught this unique course for two years. Given the appointment of former Chilean President Michele Bachelet to head UN Women, the course is timely and relevant. This course is an overview of the United Nations (UN) and its organizing conferences, programs and funds that address issues relevant to women and families. It explores UN World Conferences on Women, and how they have addressed critical and often controversial issues. The course also discusses the various instruments and mechanisms available in the UN system to address the large number of issues concerning women throughout the world (including poverty and development, reproductive health, HIV/AIDS, trafficking, violence against women, girls education).
